While countries like the US, China, Singapore and Japan are developing metacities, where immersive technologies are integrated into urban infrastructure and everyday life, Europe is struggling with establishing itself as a leader in cutting-edge technologies. Still, it is making rapid progress in shaping the virtual future. In its letter of intent, the European Commission highlights the establishment of a digitally advanced Europe as a key initiative for 2023. It also notes that initiatives related to virtual worlds, including the metaverse, are one of the top priorities. In line with this intent, the development of a European metacity is already in progress in Riga, Latvia.
